Bone and Sinus Grafts

Rebuilding Failing Jaw Bones

We often see the signs of a failing smile above the gumline. Lost or damaged teeth are generally easy to spot, especially at the front of your smile. But below your gum line, you may have issues with your jaw.

Resorption is a naturally occurring deterioration of bone mass. When you lose a tooth, the area of bone that once supported it breaks down.

Over time, this becomes visible in your facial structure. A lack of bone means the skin around your lips lacks support, and you start developing an aged appearance.

Bone loss makes it difficult to place dental implants. Without adequate density in your jaw, we can’t anchor titanium implants and rehabilitate your smile. We can do a bone graft or sinus lift to restore this lost bone mass.

What Causes Bone Loss?

Jaw bone resorption occurs for several reasons. It’s a common issue that can affect you after losing teeth. But there are other causes, including trauma, gum disease, following the removal of tumours or cysts, and age.

Bone loss occurs gradually. As well as not having enough density to support dental implants, the skin around your mouth may begin to sag, giving your smile an aged appearance.

The Science Behind Bone Augmentation

Sometimes referred to as a block graft or bone augmentation, bone grafts rebuild the jaw in preparation for implant surgery. As with other parts of your body, it’s possible to remodel or regenerate bone tissue. Bone augmentation typically has excellent success rates.

Your graft can use a small piece of bone from another part of your body or synthetic material. Sometimes, bone grafts use materials of animal origin or from a bone bank. We’ll apply the material directly to your jaw.

Over time, the new material fuses with your jaw.

The best choice is an autogenous graft that uses your own bone. Your jaw will accept the bone, and the healing process will be quicker.

Bone Graft Types

Onlay grafts are directly applied to the bone’s surface. After gradually building a mature connection with your jaw, we can perform dental implant surgery.

A sinus lift is a commonly used bone graft technique where the upper jaw lacks density. The maxillary sinuses are air-filled pockets on either side of the nose above your upper molar and premolar teeth.

This type of graft involves placing bone material between the maxillary sinuses and the jaw. Placing the graft in this space will create sufficient bone density to support implants.

What To Expect From Your Bone Graft Process

Before your bone graft, we’ll take jaw scans to assess the density and plan the procedure.

We’ll perform your procedure while you’re under anaesthetic so you won’t feel a thing. To place the graft material, we’ll enter through your gums. After placing the bone in position, we’ll close your gums with stitches.

You can usually return to your usual daily routine after a short time. Any discomfort can be easily managed and should subside entirely after a week or two.

Although you’ll feel completely normal again after a while, beneath the surface of your gums, your jaw will gradually heal as the graft fuses. This can take several months. Factors that affect the healing process include the position and type of graft used and your body’s natural capacity for quick recovery.

Once we’re happy your jaw has fully healed, you can receive dental implant surgery.

“I have a phobia of the dentist after previous bad experiences. Dentist Sophie is amazing. I wouldn’t see anyone else. She now looks after my little boys teeth too and is great with him. The hygienist is brilliant too, talked to me step by step about what was happening and what I could do better to keep my teeth healthy. All the staff at Hale are really friendly and welcoming. The ladies on the desk are always really kind to my little boy. Thanks to everyone and we look forward to our next visit.”
Julie Page
“My first visit to the clinic was very positive. I am extremely anxious at dental appointments but they were so patient with me. Everything was done to minimise my anxiety. I feel confident going ahead now, with a full programme of implant work in the next few months. This is a huge step for me and I have full confidence in the team I met at the clinic who explained the whole procedure to me. Thank you! This dentophobe is actually looking forward to starting treatment.”

“I have been going to Hale Dental for a while now. They are very professional and gentle. I can safely say that they are the first dentist that listens. They don’t offer you treatment that you don’t need. All the options are clearly explained to you and everyone is very careful and gently through the treatment to put you at ease. I can’t say that I love going to the dentist but I do love Hale Dental.”
Svetoslav Ivanov
“I went to Hale based on a recommendation, to have Invisalign treatment. For over 40 years I had horrendously crooked teeth with one front tooth pointing backwards at a sharp angle. From the point of initial consultation and contact Megan, Sophie and the team have been outstanding. The treatment was fully explained, every step of the way. Each session has been done in minutes and no question is too much. I always get a great explanation of what each session will do. I’m now nearing the end and starting to whiten whilst using the final finishing aligners. My teeth? I’m absolutely delighted and I’m not finished yet.”
Mark Stanton
“One of the best dentists I have ever been to. From check-in the reception staff were super friendly and knowledgable. Then the dentist was amazing – he explained everything and did lots to make sure I felt comfortable. He even took photos and showed where and why I might require treatment. I had fillings put in and it was a good experience. Will be visiting here again next time I need any dental work”
Jay Sondhi
“My local Dentist recommended I consult Richard and the Team at Hale Dental & Implant Clinic regarding issues I was having with an old implant. Despite being officially closed over the Christmas / New Year period, Richard reviewed X-rays and photos of my teeth and arranged to see me at the earliest opportunity. I subsequently received treatment that was simply first class in all aspects and have no hesitation is recommending to others.”
