Simple Dental Restoration
From a young age, we’re all taught how to keep our teeth clean and avoid too much sugar.
Tooth decay is one of the most common health issues we face. But when bacteria break down the surface of our teeth, we’re left with cavities.
Typically, we’ll repair decay using a filling. However, when the damaged area is too large, or the tooth’s structure too compromised to use a filling, we’ll use a custom restoration known as an onlay instead. Onlays can also repair chipped or cracked teeth.
What Is an Onlay?
Onlays are partial dental restorations made from porcelain or resin. Whereas crowns cover the whole tooth, an onlay repairs damage to the cusp. This is the area at the tip of the surface used for biting and chewing.
Once placed, an onlay will restore the bite function, allowing you to eat normally while blending seamlessly with the tooth.
The Onlay Process
Assessment
To begin, we’ll assess the damaged tooth to determine whether onlays are the right solution. Following this, we’ll plan the procedure.
Preparation
To make space for the onlay, we sometimes need to remove a small portion of the tooth. If necessary, we’ll do this before taking the impressions the lab will use to custom-make your onlays. At this point, we may place a temporary restoration.
Placement
Once your onlay is ready, we’ll ask you to come back to the clinic, and we’ll place it. This step is straightforward, and once we’re happy, we’ll bond the onlay into position.
