Root Canal

Advanced Treatment for Dental Infection

In a busy life, nobody has time for a toothache.

But ignoring the problem won’t fix it. In fact, the pain may indicate that your tooth is infected. Dental infections occur when bacteria enters the tooth. This is often through a cavity or damaged area. If your tooth is infected, receiving treatment quickly is vital.

As bacteria enter the living core of your tooth, the ‘dental pulp’ which consists of cells, nerve endings, and connective tissue, becomes infected. The dental pulp is found in the centre of your tooth and extends into the root canals. When the pulp is infected, it can cause severe discomfort, throbbing pain, and even swelling around the affected tooth. If left untreated, the tooth will die.

A root canal treatment, or endodontic procedure, removes the infection to save your tooth. Although root canals are often associated with pain, it’s typically the infection that hurts, not the treatment to remove it.

At Hale Dental, we provide exceptional endodontic therapies, led by Endodontic Specialist, Dr Obyda Essam, who has vast experience in complex Endodontic treatments. Dr Essam utilises state-of-the-art technology and equipment to provide his endodontic treatments. Obyda performs all of his dental treatments under high magnification dental microscope and accepts referrals for consultations and treatment of complex root canal treatment, root canal re-treatment, regenerative Endodontic therapy, vital pulp therapy and surgical Endodontics, including root end surgery (Apicoectomy), root-section and root resorption repair.

The Signs of Infection

A toothache is often a sign that you have a cavity, but it could also mean your tooth is infected. Here are the signs that indicate your tooth has an infection:

Pain when biting or chewing

Discomfort when eating or drinking hot or cold food and drinks

Swollen gums

Pus

Facial swelling

Dark areas on the infected tooth

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, schedule a consultation as soon as possible. As the infection progresses, it kills the tooth. Your tooth may become abscessed, and the infection will soon spread to other parts of your mouth and body.

Your Endodontic Treatment

At Hale Dental, we want you to feel at ease throughout your root canal treatment. Before we start, we’ll tell you what you can expect and answer any questions you may have. Here is a brief outline of the procedure.

Assessment

First, we need to assess your tooth to determine whether it’s infected. We’ll take x-rays to measure the extent of the infection and use them as a reference during your treatment.

image
Preparation

Before your procedure, we’ll administer an anaesthetic. This helps numb the area and reduce pain and discomfort throughout.

Treatment

Next, we’ll enter the affected tooth and carefully remove any infected matter. Once we’re satisfied the bacteria has gone, we’ll fill the inner cavity with a natural latex-like substance called gutta-percha. Finally, we’ll close the tooth with a filling.

We may recommend a follow-up appointment to have a crown fitted. A crown will protect the tooth from further damage and infection.

Revitalise

After your treatment, the anaesthetic will take a while to wear off. During this time, avoid driving, chewing, and drinking hot beverages. Once the numbness goes, you should not experience any more toothache. You can take paracetamol or Ibuprofen to manage any sensitivity.

In some cases, we may prescribe antibiotics following a root canal treatment.
